BREEDING OPERATIONS AT TCR JENGKA SPRINGS

Introduction:

The cattle shown in these photographs are the foundation heifers and breeding dams we have chosen to form the basis of our first breeding herd.

Based on the hardy resilient indigenous Malaysian Zebu, a tropical breed commonly referred to as the KK (Kedah Kelantan) or Lembu KK and the LID (Local Indian Dairy) animal.

These hardy native animals will form the backbone of our Malaysian breed development program, promoting the conservation of a native and proven bloodline to meet the immediate and future requirements of the integrated ‘under palm’ farming industry, our finishing feedlots and Halal processors.

TCR is also committed to breeding a productive tropical dairy animal and a initiating a tropical beef breed development program based on the improved KK in essence a KK/Boran cross.

CURRENT ACTION: Saving Our Local Breeds

TCR as a company is totally committed to breeding a viable herd of full-blood pedigreed KK and LID cattle.

As a result of the recurring outbreaks of Brucellosis and in defense of our mission we have removed and disposed of all the cattle from TCR Jengka Springs. Over the next three to four months the property will be sanitized and a bio-secured reception and quarantine program put in place and the facility will be restocked.

Our breeder stock procurement system will be upgraded and a series of bio-secured off-farm quarantine and holding centers will be established to protect the herd from further outbreaks.

The KK (Kedah-Kelantan) are capable of meeting today’s requirements for healthy nutritious beef. While the hardy resilient low maintenance LID (Local Indian Dairy) as a tropical dairy animal is perfectly suited for integration under palm. (In 1958 there were close to 400,000 head of LID in Malaysia, today there are less than 2,000 head of full blood animals in the country).

The new improved KK/Boran cross will produce a tropical beef animal capable of producing 400 kg in 400 days on our new feed hydroponic regime.

Services provided by TCR and the Jengka Springs Mobile and Static Exhibition and Auction Facility will be developed by the TCR board of directors and the manager with input from employees and participating owners. A basic description of the specialized management services offered TCR / Jengka Springs would include:

THE KK (Kedah Kelantan) BREED

The revival of the KK: Many of our Malaysian farmers who are currently growing cattle as integrated ventures on Palm Oil Plantations, are beginning to realise that the low maintenance highly resilient KK (indigenous Malay Zebu) is the most cost effective and productive breed for this environment.

As these Farmers and Integrators see the economical benefits the handy KK offers they are beginning to come back to the breed. Thus with very passing day the breed is regaining its former popularity.

In 2005 the then Director of Veterinary Services (JPHP) Pahang Dato’ Dr. Mohamed Azmie mooted the idea that we form a KK breed society thus on the 26th July 2006 ‘Persatuan Pembiak Baka Lambu Kedah-Kelantan (KK)’ was founded to become Malaysia’s first cattle breeders association.

Our COO Roslan Mohd Ali subsequently became the Associations Secretary and our MD Romni Yusoff O’Toole the Deputy Secretary and Breed Registrar.
